Requirements to apply:

  • Be a current resident of Sugar Land, the extra territorial jurisdiction, or have an employment address within the incorporated city limits of Sugar Land. 
  • Submit a completed application
  • Provide a copy of their drivers license 
  • Provide a copy of valid automonile liability insurance (upon admission to class) 
  • Complete background check (you will be automatically redirected to the City's third-party background vendor. The background check is at no cost to you. Please contact the Volunteer Office at 281-275-2329 if you experience issues submitting your background check). 
  • Have no criminal history containing a class B misdemeanor or above in the previous 5 years from the date of application 
  • Have no felony convictions regardless of the time period 

-Live or work in Sugar Land city limits, Greatwood or New Territory
-Be at least 18 years of age
-Willing to submit a background check
-No Class B Offenses in the last five years
-Willing to commit to attendance of all sessions

Once we have reviewed all of the applications we will contact you regarding admission. Please note that this year's class will begin on Feb. 6, 2020, and takes place on Thursday evenings with two Saturday classes. The final schedule will be sent upon acceptance.

Volunteer Agreement

As a candidate for the Citizen's Police Academy with the City of Sugar Land, I am willing to furnish and make available information for use in determining my qualifications and I am aware that any information I provide may be subject to an open records request. I certify that the information given by me in this application is true and complete. I understand and agree that any false information, misrepresentation, or concealment of facts is sufficient grounds for my immediate discharge without recourse from the City of Sugar Land's Citizens Police Academy.

I understand that for security purposes a background check will be conducted to determine my eligibility and that further background information may be requested if a specific volunteer assignment calls for a more in depth security check. Further, I understand and agree that all information furnished in this application may be verified by the City of Sugar Land. I also understand that my participation is subject to a satisfactory check of references and that I may also be subject to a "for cause" substance abuse screening at any point in time during my participation.

I hereby authorize all individuals and organizations named or referred to in this application and any law enforcement organization to give the City of Sugar Land all information relative to my employment, work habits and character and hereby release such individuals, organizations, and the City of Sugar Land from any liability for any claim or damage which may result. I further understand that this information will be used solely for the purpose of determining my eligibility.I understand the Chief of Police reserves the right to remove any participant who engages in conduct that he determines, in his sole discretion, puts employee or citizen safety or well-being in jeopardy, or negatively impacts the public perception of the Sugar Land Police Department.
